Blood White

by Jeanne Misha Martinez Carter

A dog named Trouble saved Zola from the devil but couldn’t save her from hell. She dreamed of the ocean, but Grandma Jaywa made her keep her feet on solid ground. Even if that solid ground was on the plantation, Blood White, where vivid nightmares haunted each hour with shackles of hate and hopelessness.

Grandma Jawya was stolen from Africa, but always remembered who she was. Her granddaughter Zola never saw the free lands or cherished ancestors who worshipped her existence, but she always knew she was worth more than this new land said she was.

Blood White, a southern mansion built and kept by people who wanted to be somewhere else, somewhere like the native lands of ancient beauty they came from. The Keeper made certain Blood White wasn’t a place to dream but a place to work when he said, how he said, and as he said.

But something wasn’t right with Blood White besides The Keeper’s violent and inhuman ways; something was awry. No one ever met or saw The Keeper in person. An uncle heard from an aunt who heard from a cousin that he existed, but his solid presence was a mystery none had witnessed. All that was known was that people, animals, and the earth despised him.

After the scent of death tea visited Zola far too many times, she decided to set eyes on The Keeper; find him and take from him what he had taken from her. His life. But what she finds in Blood White astounds her, the Elders, and the universe.
